CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL
CASE-2187 is stored in Standard Storage Locker 42 at Pandora Site-17. The storage environment maintains ambient temperature between 15–20°C with standard humidity, monitored weekly. Containment apparatus comprises a food-grade silicone inner container, a Bureau Model A-12 storage box as secondary containment, and a locked cabinet as the outer barrier. All containers display "Not For Consumption Without Authorization" labels. Maintenance follows standard Bureau food storage protocols, with particular attention to packaging integrity; air-exposure indications require immediate resealing.
Personnel interacting with CASE-2187 must hold standard food-handling certification at minimum, and handle the specimen wearing standard food-handling gloves under standard laboratory protocols. Exposure limits of no more than 5g per sitting and no more than 3 exposures per month are in effect. Personnel reporting prolonged philosophical contemplation following proximity to the specimen are rotated to an alternative Bureau Site for no less than one week. Supervisors monitor staff for research fatigue and rotate assignments as needed.
Monitoring consists of monthly weight verification, quarterly composition analysis, and visual inspection at supervisory discretion.
Consumption of CASE-2187 for research purposes is permitted with appropriate authorization and documented under standard testing protocols. Test subjects are informed of potential effects and provide written consent before exposure. Temporary psychological effects beyond the direct taste experience may persist for up to 48 hours. Department supervisors limit testing sessions to one per week per department.
In the event of public discovery or exposure, field agents implement Cover Story CC-2187-01 ("Experimental Flavor Research"), recover remaining samples per standard evidence-collection procedure, and document all civilian exposures. Follow-up interviews are conducted with civilian exposees to document any unusual experiences.
Phase Three effects (see Notes & Observations, 2024-03-12) were reviewed by the Office of Paranormal Metrics in March 2024. Re-classification above PAX was considered and declined; current containment posture is retained pending continued observation.
PHENOMENOLOGICAL SUMMARY
CASE-2187 presents as a high-quality dark chocolate of approximately 99% cacao content. Chemical analysis identifies standard chocolate components alongside minor unexplained molecular signatures that present no documented health risk. The material behaves as conventional chocolate in most respects, including standard melting characteristics, expected texture, and ordinary appearance.
The primary anomalous property manifests upon consumption. Subjects report tasting abstract concepts and emotional states rather than conventional chocolate flavors. These "conceptual flavors" persist for 10–15 minutes following consumption and present no known physiological risks. Subjects remain fully aware of the unusual nature of their experience and typically describe it as "interesting" or "peculiar" rather than distressing.
Documented conceptual flavors include but are not limited to:
- "Existential burden"
- "Mental strain"
- "Childhood nostalgia"
- "Academic accomplishment"
- "Financial planning"
- "Future possibilities"
- "Platonic affection"
- "Administrative failure"
- "Professional inadequacy"
- "Bureaucratic efficiency"
- "Forgotten deadlines"
- "Unrequited romantic interest"
- "Family disappointment"
- "Social rejection"
- "Artistic frustration"
Secondary effects include mild synesthetic perceptions in which emotions are briefly experienced as textures. The effect is temporary and is consistently described by test subjects as "novel" or "enlightening."
CASE-2187's effects are neutralized by simultaneous consumption of dairy products. Subjects with congenital ageusia (absence of taste sensitivity) report no anomalous effects.
Effect intensity and duration scale with both exposure quantity and cumulative exposure over time. Three phases have been documented:
- Phase One (standard test response). Initial taste identification of non-physical concepts; duration 10–15 minutes; complete return to normal taste perception.
- Phase Two (larger quantities). Mild emotional synesthesia; duration 20–30 minutes; no lasting perceptual change.
- Phase Three (repeated cumulative exposure). Temporary fixation on philosophical or abstract considerations (1–8 hours depending on exposure); mild distress in subjects who encountered negative conceptual flavors; tendency to communicate in abstract rather than practical terms.
Most subjects report the experience as thought-provoking rather than concerning, and many request to participate in follow-up testing. Approximately 1 in 5 subjects who encounter negative conceptual flavors (such as "administrative failure" or "professional inadequacy") report mild anxiety persisting 24–48 hours beyond the direct effects, accompanied by increased self-criticism regarding their work performance.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
1972-06-22 — Initial Analysis — Dr. ███████ / BAR-OPM-47291
Preliminary composition established as high-end dark chocolate (≈99% cacao) with minor anomalous molecular signatures. Taste testing pending appropriate authorizations. Initial volunteer pool surprisingly enthusiastic about participation.
1973-07-28 — Taste Profile Documentation — OPM
First controlled taste test conducted with five volunteers. All subjects reported flavor experiences distinctly different from conventional chocolate. Subject A described tasting "the feeling of finishing a good book on a rainy day"; Subject C reported "the flavor of successfully parallel parking on the first try." Experiences lasted approximately 12 minutes before normal taste perception returned. Subjects expressed curiosity rather than distress.
1973-08-15 — Secondary Effects Noted — OPM
Some subjects report mild synesthetic effects when consuming samples greater than 2g, manifesting as experiencing emotions as textures — happiness described as "smooth," worry as "granular." Effects are temporary and consistently reported as "interesting" by participants.
1973-08-23 — Neutralization Discovery — OPM
Laboratory technician ████ accidentally consumed CASE-2187 with milk coffee and reported no anomalous effects. Controlled follow-up testing confirms that dairy products consistently neutralize the conceptual flavor properties. Subjects with lactose intolerance were noted to be ambivalent to this finding.
1973-11-04 — Origin Investigation Progress — ACD
Traced to small artisanal chocolate maker in ████████ who cultivates cacao under unconventional soil conditions. Maker unaware of unusual properties beyond "distinctive flavor profile." Business records and sourcing information collected for further study. Soil samples taken for analysis.
1974-09-19 — Interdepartmental Meeting Notes — DPC Liaison ███████
Discussion with DPC representatives regarding classification status. General consensus that CASE-2187 represents a minor anomaly with potential recreational or therapeutic applications rather than a containment concern. Research focus shifted toward beneficial applications.
1974-10-15 — Departmental Productivity Impact Report — OBP
Following Incident CASE-2187-2, a "one testing session per week per department" policy was established. Multiple testing sessions within the same department produced exponential rather than linear increases in philosophical discussion, with documented cases of entire research teams spending up to three hours debating the "metaphysical implications of paperwork flow" rather than completing scheduled tasks.
Morale ratings increased by 37% following these discussions; task completion metrics decreased by 42% on testing days. Scheduling testing for Friday afternoons — when productivity naturally declines — has produced a net positive effect on both morale and weekly productivity.
1978-04-12 — Therapeutic Application Testing — OPM Neurocognitive Anomalies Research Sector
Preliminary trials using CASE-2187 in controlled therapeutic settings show promise for enhancing emotional awareness. Subjects report improved ability to identify and articulate complex emotional states following exposure. Ethics committee approval pending for expanded trials.
1985-02-09 — Test Log 2187-08 — OPM
Subject: Volunteer Group C, 5 participants.
Procedure: Blind taste testing of CASE-2187 versus conventional 90% dark chocolate.
Results: All participants correctly identified CASE-2187 based on conceptual flavor experiences. Duration of effects consistently 11–14 minutes. Descriptions included "tasting the satisfaction of finding the perfect parking spot," "the flavor of remembering where I left my keys," "what solving a difficult puzzle tastes like," and "being stuck in traffic while running late" (reported with mild discomfort).
Analysis: Conceptual flavor profiles appear linked to recent experiences unique to each subject, with both positive and routine experiences represented.
1987-03-15 — Theoretical Framework — OPM Neurocognitive Anomalies Research Sector
Current working hypotheses regarding CASE-2187's mechanism of action:
- Specialized Neurochemical Response. Compounds in CASE-2187 may temporarily alter neural pathways between gustatory processing and conceptual association areas, creating novel sensory connections without disrupting normal function.
- Enhanced Synesthetic Expression. CASE-2187 may amplify latent synesthetic capabilities present in all humans but typically below conscious threshold, essentially "unmasking" existing neural connections.
- Unique Flavor Compound Interpretation. The anomalous compounds may not create conceptual tastes directly but instead produce flavors so unfamiliar that the brain interprets them through conceptual rather than sensory frameworks.
1992-04-21 — Historical Context — OPM Aberrant Linguistics Sector
Limited historical precedents exist for similar phenomena. Ancient South American texts reference ceremonial cacao preparations that allowed participants to "taste the spirits' wisdom." Medieval European monastic records mention rare confections producing "divine insights through the tongue." Several cultures retain traditions involving foods that supposedly provide conceptual rather than physical experiences. These references suggest CASE-2187 may represent a naturally occurring phenomenon rather than a manufactured anomaly.
1998-06-08 — Test Log 2187-17 — OPM
Subject: Volunteer Group E, participants with culinary training.
Procedure: Comparative analysis of CASE-2187 paired with various foods and beverages.
Results: Wine pairings extended conceptual flavor duration by approximately 20%. Acidic foods diminished effects. Spicy foods produced more complex or layered conceptual experiences, ranging from "professional accomplishment" to "deadline pressure" to "afternoon boredom" within a single tasting.
Analysis: Environmental and pairing factors influence the subjective experience consistently across the response spectrum. Professional food critics in the group expressed interest in potential culinary applications.
2003-09-26 — Negative Conceptual Flavor Documentation — OPM
Third round of testing confirmed established patterns regarding negative conceptual flavors. Subjects experiencing professional-performance or administrative-competence negative flavors displayed mild anxiety persisting 24–48 hours after exposure. Workplace performance metrics remained unaffected; subjective concern about bureaucratic efficacy did not. Effects continue to correlate with pre-existing stress levels and proximity to departmental deadlines. Current screening protocols recommended for retention.
2010-08-19 — Personnel Behavioral Indicators — OPM
Patterns observed in personnel exposed to CASE-2187 during testing or assigned to its containment. None individually constitute cause for intervention; collectively, the cluster reliably marks recent exposure or proximity.
- Unscheduled philosophical discussion among typically pragmatic staff.
- Decreased dairy product consumption among personnel with proximity to the specimen.
- Requisition forms submitted for "conceptual office supplies" or meeting time requested to discuss "the taste of bureaucratic purpose."
- Uncharacteristic anxiety in personnel who reported negative conceptual flavors during testing.
2014-11-12 — Environmental Influence Theory — OPM
Analysis of 147 documented conceptual flavor experiences reveals a statistically significant correlation between testing environment and the prevalence of bureaucracy-related conceptual flavors. Subjects tested within Bureau facilities reported bureau-related flavors at a rate 340% higher than subjects tested at the neutral offsite facility in ██████. During holiday periods, bureaucratic flavor frequency decreased by 62%, with family and personal relationship flavors increasing proportionally.
Preliminary hypothesis: CASE-2187 interacts with the subconscious preoccupations of the subject at the moment of consumption, temporarily bringing these to gustatory awareness. This would explain why Bureau employees frequently report professional and administrative conceptual flavors while civilian test subjects more commonly report personal relationship and general life experience flavors.
2024-03-12 — Phase Three Review — Dr. ███████ / BAR-OPM-47291
Following accumulation of Phase Three data — the temporary philosophical fixation, the 24–48 hour anxiety in approximately 1 in 5 negative-flavor exposures, and the documented escalation curve with cumulative exposure — re-classification of CASE-2187 above PAX was placed under review by this office.
Re-classification was declined. Phase Three effects have not produced personnel impacts that existing exposure limits, rotation discretion, and pre-exposure stress screening do not adequately mitigate. No subject has required intervention beyond brief counseling. Reported anxiety persists within ordinary workplace stress ranges and resolves without follow-up.
PAX-L is retained. Phase Three remains under continued observation; the current posture is provisional, not settled.
DISCOVERY LOG
CASE-2187 came to Bureau attention following press accounts of an "enlightenment chocolate" served at a boutique food festival in ██████, Belgium. Multiple attendees described having unusual taste experiences.
Initial investigation was conducted by Agents ████ and █████████ under standard food-safety inspector credentials. The chocolate was traced to artisanal chocolatier █████ ██████, who willingly provided samples for analysis when informed of potential "unusual properties" in his creation. ██████ explained the cacao was sourced from a small, specialized plantation known for unique growing conditions, with no awareness of anomalous effects beyond "distinctive character."
Acquisition was completed without incident. The chocolatier voluntarily provided his remaining stock for research purposes in exchange for standard compensation and consultation on future Bureau culinary research.
Historical research suggests similar phenomena have occurred sporadically throughout history, typically associated with specific growing conditions or processing methods for cacao. While theoretically reproducible, the exact conditions remain unclear.
INCIDENT LOG
1973-07-14 – Incident CASE-2187-1: Laboratory Over-Exposure
During an approved tasting session, laboratory assistant ███████ consumed approximately 5g of CASE-2187 against the 2g standard test portion. Subject reported an intensified experience described as "tasting the concept of infinite recursion" and spent approximately 40 minutes explaining the philosophical implications of self-referential systems to colleagues.
The episode resolved without intervention. Subject returned to normal cognition and described the experience as "intellectually stimulating if somewhat embarrassing in retrospect." Follow-up psychological evaluation recorded no lasting effects beyond a newly developed interest in formal logic.
Portion limits for testing were issued as recommended practice following this incident.
1974-09-23 – Incident CASE-2187-2: Appreciation-Event Tasting
CASE-2187 was incorporated into a dessert buffet at the Bureau's annual staff appreciation event. Approximately 28 staff members consumed small portions, generating an impromptu two-hour philosophical discussion in the cafeteria described by participants as "the most engaging office party conversation in Bureau history."
Topics included the nature of consciousness, career satisfaction metrics, and the existential implications of bureaucracy. Staff reported the experience as "surprisingly positive" and "team-building." No adverse effects were documented. Three staff members submitted internal-transfer requests the following week, citing philosophical interests developed during the event.
The event was documented as a successful application test. Similar controlled events have since been approved for morale purposes.
1981-11-07 – Incident CASE-2187-3: Research Group F Testing
Testing session with Research Group F. Participants experienced conceptual flavors including "bureaucratic redundancy," "missed promotion opportunity," "form-filing anxiety," "filing system satisfaction," and "deadline completion relief." Those reporting negative conceptual flavors displayed mild anxiety about workplace performance for approximately 36 hours following exposure, consistent with previously documented patterns.
Investigation determined that testing had been scheduled the day before quarterly performance reviews. Three subjects filed identical requisition forms for "conceptual deadline extensions" with the Office of Bureau Personnel.
The incident resolved without intervention. One participant required brief counseling after attempting to categorize departmental communications according to how loudly each document would scream if it could feel pain, rather than standard filing protocols.
Pre-exposure screening for baseline stress levels was instituted following this incident.
1995-02-14 – Incident CASE-2187-4: Offsite Civilian Trial
Offsite testing with volunteer group H (civilians without Bureau exposure or knowledge) produced conceptual flavors reflecting personal rather than workplace contexts. Subjects reported tasting "argument with spouse," "mortgage anxiety," "wedding reception awkwardness," "childhood pet loss," "weekend anticipation," and "garden pride."
One subject, after experiencing the flavor described as "parental disappointment," became visibly distressed and spent 47 minutes writing a reconciliation letter to estranged family members. Another subject, after tasting "neighborhood barbecue satisfaction," began planning an elaborate community event for the following month.
