No preventative containment measures exist for CASE-1965. Response protocols focus on post-manifestation stabilization, psychological triage, and perceptual-interference mitigation.

Civilian reports of persistent dream states involving familial abandonment are to be flagged and cross-referenced with CASE-1965 behavioral indicators. Subjects exhibiting signs of CASE-1965 exposure are to be placed under indefinite psychiatric observation. Mental health professionals operating within Bureau-monitored referral networks are briefed under Cover Story CC-1965-01 "ABANDONMENT COMPLEX" — a newly identified presentation of complex grief with atypical mnemonic consistency — without disclosure of the anomalous classification.

Individuals found attempting to locate or reestablish contact with CASE-1965-β instances are to be detained and administered memory reconfiguration per PR-400-20. Reconfiguration does not remove the conviction (see Note 2024-11-08). It is administered to suspend search behavior until the memory reconstitutes, and is repeated at each recurrence. Voluntary euthanasia for Phase Three subjects is pre-authorized by the Ministerial Subcommittee on Ethical Review.

Program PG-1965-500-01 "LONG SHADOW" maintains standing liaison with cooperating psychiatric facilities and coordinates the OPM field recovery teams assigned to Phase Three subjects. Recovery teams are advised not to interfere with a subject's travel unless the subject reaches a major roadway or geographic threshold defined in the LONG SHADOW perimeter annex.

Digital surveillance tools are to monitor for anomalous search terms, including "long road dream," "he kept walking," and "they never looked back." Individuals who search these terms repeatedly should be considered potential CASE-1965 presenting subjects.

CASE-1965 is an oneiric phenomenon triggered by the completion of a spontaneous sequence of mundane actions. The precise activation sequence varies by individual but typically includes combinations of:

• Consuming specific combinations of food within a 12-hour period
• Repeating unconscious movement patterns over multiple days
• Engaging in nostalgia-related rituals involving family or isolation

Phase One
Following the activation sequence, the subject will experience a recurring dream event referred to as CASE-1965-α. In the event, the subject consistently watches a loved one walk away along a long path or road, typically without acknowledgement or response. The dream ends when the figure pauses, looks back briefly, and then continues walking. Subjects awaken in a state of acute emotional distress.

After the CASE-1965-α event, the subject will begin to experience visual phenomena involving CASE-1965-β, an individual the subject believes to be a loved one, typically a parent or spouse. CASE-1965-β will appear in peripheral vision and disappear upon direct observation. These sightings increase in frequency and proximity over time.

Subsequent investigation reveals that CASE-1965-β has never existed. Records, photographs, and the testimony of others show no evidence that the individual was real. Despite this, the subject retains vivid and emotionally intense memories of CASE-1965-β, including fabricated shared experiences.

Phase Two
A progressive breakdown in trust develops between the subject and their social circle, often accompanied by memory distortion regarding major life events. Subjects begin to reject existing loved ones as impostors and develop a fixation on locating or retrieving CASE-1965-β.

Phase Three
Subjects exhibit linguistic drift, emotional flattening, and fatalistic ideation. They often report dreams of walking the road themselves, with CASE-1965-β always just ahead. Some attempt physical travel, often walking until they collapse.

CASE-1965 was first documented in 2018 following a cluster of similar psychiatric cases reported across three Midwestern states. Investigating agents noted distinctive patterns of delusion concerning non-existent family members, accompanied by persistent dream states. Initial classification followed confirmation that the subjects' memories contained impossible consistencies, although the subjects had no prior contact with each other. The Bureau established monitoring protocols after discovering that traditional psychiatric treatments were ineffective and potentially accelerated progression to Phase Three.
